Aligning Purpose, Passion, and Performance: A PureHigh Performance Framework for Achieving Career Growth and Fulfillment

By Dr. Nguyen Vu Thuan – PureHigh

Introduction

For many years, career advisors have always emphasized a simple message: “Follow your passion and Love What You Do”. Graduates, young professionals, and even experienced executives are often told that “Doing What You Love” will naturally lead to success. However, research from Prof. Dr. Morten T. Hansen Havard and Insead suggests that this advice is incomplete and sometimes misleading. Prof. Dr. Hansen’s studies of more than 5,000 managers and employees show that passion alone does not guarantee high performance. Instead, the most successful professionals align their passion with a strong sense of purpose — a concept he describes as “P-squared” (Passion + Purpose). In his research with more than 5,000 managers and employees, individuals who combined both passion and purpose ranked significantly higher in performance than those who had only one of these elements.

Drawing on Prof. Dr. Morten T. Hansen together with literature review on purpose, passion, self-awareness, leadership, performance and Thuan’s DBA research, in today’s fast-changing economy shaped by digital transformation, artificial intelligence, and global competition, Career success requires not only passion and purpose “P-squared” but also performance discipline, continuous learning for growth, and self-awareness.

Building on Prof. Dr. Hansen’s insights and self-awareness of organizational psychologist Tasha Eurich and growth mindset of Prof. Carol Dweck and Thuan’s DBA research on modern leadership development principles, the PureHigh Performance Framework expands the original P-squared concept into a more integrated comprehensive model:

Purpose – Passion – Performance – Growth – Self-Awareness

This integrated framework helps individuals not only find meaning in their work but also achieve sustainable success and personal fulfillment. This model also help teams, departments, companies and organisations on high performance, growth with innovations and fulfillment.

1. Purpose: Contributing Beyond Yourself

There is actually a BIG difference between passion and purpose. Passion is “do what you love,” whereas purpose is “do what contributes.” Passion asks, what can the world give to you (a hedonistic inclination). Purpose asks, what can you give to the world (an other-orientation).

Purpose is the foundation of meaningful work. While passion is about what excites us, purpose focuses on how our work contributes to others and creates value.

Prof. Dr. Hansen distinguishes the two clearly:

  • Passion asks: “What can the world give me?”
  • Purpose asks: “What can I give the world?”

His research shows that individuals who feel their work contributes to something meaningful consistently perform better than those who lack such a sense of contribution. Employees with both passion and purpose ranked near the 80th percentile of performance, while those with passion but no purpose ranked around the 20th percentile.

Purpose therefore provides direction and meaning, guiding professionals toward roles where their talents create real impact.

In career development, purpose often emerges when individuals align their values, strengths, and potential contribution to organizations and society.

2. Passion: The Energy that Drives Work

While purpose gives direction, passion provides energy.

Passion represents the enthusiasm, curiosity, and excitement individuals feel toward certain activities. When people work on tasks they genuinely enjoy, they invest greater attention, creativity, and persistence in their work.

However, Prof. Dr. Hansen’s research warns that blindly following passion can be risky. Passion alone does not guarantee success and may lead individuals to pursue careers that do not create meaningful value or sustainable opportunities.

The key is therefore alignment: passion must be directed toward work that serves a meaningful purpose.

When passion supports purpose, individuals experience stronger motivation, deeper engagement, and greater resilience in their careers.

3. Performance: Turning Meaning into Results

Purpose and passion create motivation, but performance transforms motivation into tangible results and outcomes.

Top performers distinguish themselves not by working longer hours but by working smarter and more strategically. Hansen’s research highlights that successful professionals focus their effort on a small number of priorities and apply intense effort to create high value.

Within the PureHigh philosophy, performance includes:

  • delivering measurable results
  • creating commercial or organizational value
  • maintaining execution discipline
  • continuously improving capabilities.

Performance ensures that purpose and passion translate into real impact for organizations, customers, and society.

4. Growth: The New Non-linear Career Success

In modern careers, success is no longer linear. Instead of climbing a predictable ladder, professionals navigate what many experts call a “career jungle gym” moving across roles, projects, and industries to build new capabilities.

This means career success depends heavily on continuous learning and growth.

Growth includes:

  • acquiring new skills and knowledge
  • expanding leadership capability
  • adapting to technological change
  • exploring new opportunities and responsibilities.

Professionals who commit to lifelong learning and strategic development are better positioned to remain relevant and competitive in rapidly evolving industries.

Growth therefore acts as the engine that sustains long-term performance.

5. Self-Awareness: The Foundation of Career Vision

At the center of the PureHigh framework lies self-awareness.

Self-awareness allows individuals to understand:

  • Our strengths and weaknesses
  • Our values and motivations
  • the types of work that energize us
  • the values and contributions that we want to make in the world.

Career development research consistently shows that individuals who reflect on their values, passions, and capabilities are better able to design meaningful career paths.

Self-awareness also helps professionals adjust their direction when circumstances change. In a world characterized by technological disruption and economic uncertainty, the ability to reflect, learn, and adapt becomes one of the most critical career capabilities.

Within the PureHigh philosophy, self-awareness acts as the integrating force that aligns purpose, passion, performance, and growth.

The PureHigh Career Model

Together, these five elements form an integrated cycle of professional excellence:

  1. Self-Awareness – understanding your strengths, values, and motivations
  2. Purpose – defining the meaningful contribution you want to make
  3. Passion – generating the energy and enthusiasm to pursue that purpose
  4. Performance – delivering measurable value, results and outcomes through disciplined execution
  5. Growth – continuously learning and expanding capabilities.

In a world characterized by technological disruption and economic uncertainty, the ability to reflect, learn, and adapt becomes one of the most critical career capabilities.

When these 5 elements align, individuals not only achieve higher performance but also experience greater fulfillment, resilience, and long-term career satisfaction.

Conclusion

The traditional advice to simply “follow your passion” is no longer sufficient for navigating modern careers. Research by Prof. Dr. Morten T. Hansen demonstrates that true career success emerges when passion is matched with purpose.

Yet in a rapidly changing global economy, professionals must go further. Sustainable success requires integrating purpose, passion, performance, growth, and self-awareness into a unified career strategy.

The PureHigh framework offers such a model. By cultivating deep self-awareness, aligning passion with meaningful purpose, delivering high performance, and committing to continuous growth, individuals can possess the strong ability to reflect, learn, and adapt can unlock their full potential and build careers that are not only successful but also deeply fulfilling.
